Community-Driven Land Use Planning

Recent changes to the First Nations Land Management Act (FNLMA) have given communities the opportunity to have greater control over their lands. These changes mean that communities can develop their own laws related to land use, environment, and natural resources as well as take advantage of economic development activities. In order to seize this opportunity, communities have to go through a process, a portion of which involves land use planning.

Desiring to participate in the FNLMA and develop their own land code, Mitaanjigamiing First Nation contacted our team to help them create a land use plan. We have established a community-driven methodology to land use planning that ensures the project takes direction from the client, and accurately reflects their needs. It was very important to both us and our client that the land use plan developed would not only be conducive to future, development, but also respect the vision and values of Mitaanjigamiing.

Pairing our planning and GIS expertise with consistent community engagement throughout the project, our team created an effective land use plan with an action-oriented implementation strategy. It will be a living document for the community to utilize, informing current needs like housing and economic development, and adapting it for future objectives.

It has been exciting to see our work put into action by the community and benefit Mitaanjigamiing First Nation. Miigwetch for allowing us to be a part of this important project!
